Story behind the bag
Gabrielle Chanel was 12 years old when her mother died. After the death of her mother, her father brought her together with her older sister to an orphanage. Her childhood was far away from glamorous. In her 20’s, she worked as a seamstressing at a tailoring store and used to sing. During that time she met her lover who lent her moneyto open her first shop. Her career began with hats and later went on to clothing and accessories.
Coco gave named the bag 2.55 because it refers to the release date of the bag. She presented it in February 1955. She wanted to create a bag which she not always have to hold in their hands, and therefore created it with a thin chain strap. This reminded her of her time in the orphanage because the nuns wore similar lanyards. Coco was also inspired by the windows of glass back in the orphanage and also brought this ideal into this bag which is the quilted pattern on the outside of the bag. The dark red coloar inside the bag reminded her of her old school uniform. She kept her love letters from her admirers inside the small, secret place inside in the front of the bag. (I should add more pictures so you know what I mean).
Even though my bag is the Classic Flap model and not the 2.55, it still has the characteristics mentioned above. I also want to represent the key differences between the Chanel Classic Flap bag and the Chanel 2.55 Reissue model:

1. The strap: The strap of the Classic Flap has leather incorporated whereas the straps of the Reissue solely have a silver or gold chain.
2. The lock: The Classic Flap has the CC logo (which was introduced by Karl Lagerfeld in the 1980’s) and the 2.55 has the so called Mademoiselle lock.
3. The leather: The Classic model is available in calfskin and lambskin leather and the material of the Reissue changes every season.
